Lot Essay

Dr. Peter Cherry observes that this painting is closely related to the left hand section of another still life painting by Francisco Barrera, exhibited by Caylus Anticuario in Madrid, with a near identical composition. Dr. Cherry also recounts in an accompanying letter that the style of this painting is consistent with the attribution to Francisco Barrera (see Tres Siglos de Pintura, Caylus Anticuario, Madrid, 1995, p. 57, with an illustration of the related works by Barrera).
