Lot Essay

Although little research has been undertaken on Willem Uppink (see J. Knoef, Willem Uppink, Oud-Holland, vol. 53, 1936, pp. 1-5), he was one of the most accomplished eighteenth century painters of decorations for grand homes along Amsterdam's canals. P. Spies (Het Grachtenboek, 1992, I, p. 183) mentions a house at Keizersgracht no. 269 which contained several rooms decorated with wall hangings by Uppink, and a set of such hangings dated 1807 was sold at Frederik Muller, Amsterdam, May 13, 1924, lot 860.
