A SHIBAYAMA STYLE SHEATH INRO
MEIJI PERIOD (LATE 19TH CENTURY)

Of slightly rounded rectangular shape with elaborately inlaid outer case enclosing a rounded rectangular togidashi three-case inro, the sheath inlaid in mother-of-pearl, horn, colored ivory, aogai and coral on a gold ground with skeletons as Emma-O and a demon guardian sitting in judgement of two oni whose shadow images, rendered in togidashi, are reflected in the mirror of eternity to the king's left, the opposite side of the sheath similarly inlaid on a matching ground with an earlier scene of revellers under the cherry trees, a distant view of trees and mountains lacquered in togidashi; the enclosed three-case inro of rounded rectangular shape decorated overall in two-color gold togidashi with brocade panels, the interior cases nashiji; fitted with a cloisonné enamel bead ojime--4in. (10.2cm.) high, minute and minor dents to sheath
