A LARGE SHIBAYAMA STYLE THREE CASE INRO
MEIJI PERIOD (LATE 19TH CENTURY)
Constructed in the form of a large double-gourd flask decorated with two large and recessed panels of precious emblems and other auspicious symbols, including musical instruments, a large peach on a 'silver' phoenix-and wave-base, rui and plum balanced on a kirin, archaic vessels and flowering cherry blossoms, all inlaid in mother-of-pearl, colored ivory and horn on kinji grounds, the opposite side further inlaid in matching materials in identical silver-edged reserves with cranes and flowers, elaborate baskets of plum, peonies and chrysanthemums and a dragon-entwined vessel on matching kinji grounds, the exterior of the inro surrounding the panels lacquered in two-colored gold in slightly raised relief with foliate scroll reserved on a gyobu ground, the interior cases nashiji; fitted with a large Shibayama-style inlaid ivory bead ojime--5 3/8in.
