drypoint and aquatint in colors, circa 1893, on laid paper, watermark Vanderley, a very fine impression of this rare print, the colors fresh, signed in pencil, with the artist's blue monogram stamp (L. 604), the only recorded proof in the tenth state (of eleven), with wide margins, some extremely pale staining and surface soiling in the margins and on the reverse, otherwise in very good condition, framed

Lot Essay

Impressions of Gathering Fruit, Cassatt's first color print to depict figures in a lush outdoor setting, are rare. This is the only known impression in the tenth state. The edition in the eleventh (final) state was to have been twenty; Mathews and Shapiro were able to locate only six examples.
