Lot Essay

We are grateful to Fred G. Meijer and Edwin Buijsen of the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie, The Hague, for informing us that the present work is based on a painting by Jacob de Backer, which was formerly attributed to Otto van Veen, in the Bildergalerie, Potsdam, Schloss Sanssouci (see J. Müller Hofstede, Jacques de Backer. Ein Vertreter der Florentinisch-Römischen Maniera in Antwerpen, Wallraf-Richartz-Jahrbuch, XXXV, 1973, p. 237, fig. 13). Mr. Meijer further notes that the present work can be counted among the better quality 17th century copies known of the Potsdam original and may be by a pupil or assistant working directly in de Backer's studio.

Several versions of this composition are known including those in the Kunstmuseum, Bern, Inv. no. 511 and the Wiesbaden Museum, Inv. no. M.40, both as Otto van Veen. A further work was offered at Sotheby's, Monaco, June 26, 1983, lot 413 as attributed to Otto van Veen.
