Lot Essay

Painted circa 1868-1870, using the Directoire as his inspiration, Tissot skillfully illustrated the luxurious fabrics of the eighteenth century. He also appealed to his contemporaries by painting en plein air. In 1870, Tissot left Paris for London, leaving behind these historically-inspired works.

This painting has been authenticated by Michael Wentworth.
