Lot Essay

Although known as a painter of society in the manner of Sir William Quiller Orchardson. Kennington was one of the artists responsible for the belated arrival of French influence in Britian, through his studies in Paris. The subject matter of Millet combined with the nuances of color in the work of Bastien-Lepage and Daubigny also affected his style as well as that of landscape artists such as William James Laidlay and Fred Brown.
