By tradition, this desk is said to have descended in the family of Andrew Hamilton (1676-1741), attorney general of Pennsylvania by 1717. As he did of yellow fever in the summer of 1741, it is more likely that this desk was owned by his son James Hamilton (1710-1783). James Hamilton became mayor of Phildalphia in 1745, lieutenant-governor in 1748, and governor in 1752.
