THE PRINCE AND THE SHOWGIRL, 1957
An evening wrap worn by Marilyn Monroe as "Elsie" in the film she co-starred with Laurence Olivier, Sybil Thorndike, Richard Wattis, Jeremy Spenser, Esmond Knight, and Rosamund Greenwood. The film tells the story of an American showgirl (Monroe) who is romanced by Prince Regent of Carpathia (Olivier) during the 1912 coronation of George V.
The wrap is pale grey and rose colored organza with a pleated ruffle detail around the neckline, bodice, hip and capelet sleeves. Pink and lavender flowers with tiny green leaves are stiched along each front side and along the bottom back. A center front frog closing of matching grey organza.
The off-white chiffon dinner gown Miss Monroe wore with this costume was featured prominently at the Metropolitan Museum exhibit "Hollywood Costume Design". A color xerox photo of Ms. Monroe in the wrap accompanies the lot.
