Lot Essay

Colonel Jonathan Williams (1750-1815) was the organizer and first superintendant of the United States Military Academy at West Point and was the general of the New York Militia in 1812. This watercolor was painted in 1814 as a study for the oil portrait that now hangs at West Point.
