HAYES, RUTHERFORD B., President. Autograph letter signed ("RB Hayes") as Ohio Representative, to John R. Hunt, Washington, D.C., 4 July 1866. 1 page, 4to, written on the verso of Congressional stationery; with John R. Hunt's retained copy of his reply to Hayes.
[With:] Autograph free frank ("RB Hayes MC") on engraved envelope with "39th Congress House of Representatives Washington, D.C." in decorative lettering, addressed in Hayes' hand to "Maj John R Hunt Springdale Ohio," faint black "Jul 5" circular postmark, extreme left-hand edge torn when opened by recipient. A scarce frank.
Representative Hayes cannot fulfill a colleague's request: "...I am not sure that I can now get the 'Doc' you want, but will look around for it. My own are all distributed. We had but ten or fifteen of that 'Doc'! I send you Bancroft's Eulogy. I have plenty of Agriculture of 1866 and Patent Office (Mechanical) of [18]63..."
