HOOVER, HERBERT, President. Autograph free frank ("Herbert Hoover") as President, on "The White House" envelope with typewritten "FREE," addressed to "Mr. Philip H. Ward, Jr. Chesnut Hill, Pa.," with black duplex postmark "Washington, D.C. Jan 21 2 PM 1930," 95 x 170mm. (3 3/4 x 6 1/2 in.). Very bold signature beneath address.
ONE OF THREE KNOWN FREE FRANKS OF PRESIDENT HOOVER
A very rare frank. No other example on a "The White House" cover has been traced. The Stern Collection contained an example on a "White House Official Business" envelope (Stern, History of the 'Free Franking' of Mail in the United States, plate 12, no. 7), as did the Hessel Collection (sale, Harmer's, New York, 12 June 1990, lot 140). Phillips, American Stampless Cover Catalog, p. 215, records "None."
