Autograph free frank ("Soldiers' Letter T.Roosevelt Col 1st USVC" [U.S. Volunteer Cavalry]) as Colonel of the Rough Riders, on an envelope addressed in TR's hand to "Mr Edwin K. Merion 46-3 Canal St New York N.Y.," with black circular postmark "De Cuba" and "New York," with handstamp "Due 2 Cents," 80 x 140mm. (3 1/4 x 5 1/2 in.), soiled, wear at edges, tear at right edge obscuring part of the "De Cuba" postmark.
A "ROUGH RIDER'S" LETTER WITH A CUBAN POSTMARK AND A ROOSEVELT FRANK
An uncommon frank. Phillips' American Stampless Cover Catalog, p. 216, records that "[s]igned covers of Theodore Roosevelt exist on soldiers letters from Cuba during the Spanish-American War...Roosevelt's signature...was as an officer of his regiment, the 'Rough Riders,' certifying that the unpaid letters to which it was applied were 'Soldiers Letters,' which permitted the letters to be sent through the mails with only domestic postage collected from the addressee." Colonel Roosevelt served in Cuba from May to September 1898.
