A VERY RARE FREE FRANK FROM EX-PRESIDENT THEODORE ROOSEVELT
One of a small group of covers franked at this time from the retired President's Long Island home: "A few covers exist bearing the signature of Theodore Roosevelt as Ex-President. They bear no stamps, and are postmarked from Oyster Bay, N.Y., 1916. Though they obviously passed through the mail, no law or postal regulation has been found that authorized him to frank mail as Ex-President," (Phillips, American Stampless Cover Catalog, vol. 2, p. 216).
