T.J. Jackson, (Thomas Jonathan 'Stonewall' Jackson, CSA Major General), one and one-half page ALS, Jan. 21, 1863 war-date military field letter written in pencil to Col. A.R. Boteler, headed 'Caroline County, Va.', letter to staff officer (who was also a member of the Confederate Congress) just five weeks after Jackson's victory at Fredericksburg, 'Your letter respecting the condition of the (Shenandoah) Valley has been received. Though I have been relieved from the command there and may never again be assigned to that important trust; yet I feel deeply when I see the patriotic people of that region again under the heel of a hateful military despotism.
