A CELADON CUP AND STAND
koryo dynasty (12th century)
The deep, lotiform cup with ten-lobed sides and rim set on a recessed and flared decalobed foot and incised with alternating lotus and chrysanthemum sprays on each of the curved lobes below an arching band of foliate scroll below the rim, the small, recessed well of the interior incised with a single chrysanthemum and the whole covered by a celadon glaze with even gloss and sparse crackle which pools emerald in narrow channels; the stand also moulded with a ten-petal rim with ten recessed petals on the underside above a high, flared ten-petal foot, the slightly sloped surface of the stand incised with ten lotus blossoms and the sunken well incised with a ring of ten chrysanthemums, the circular cup support incised on the sides with lappet leaves and on the recessed top with a chrysanthemum floret within a spiral border, covered like the cup overall with a rich green celadon glaze pooling emerald--stand 5¼in. (13.3cm.) diameter, 1 3/8in. (3.5cm.) high; cup 2in. (5.2cm.) high, 2 7/8in. (7.8cm.) diameter; cup on stand 3 3/8in. (8.7cm.) high
