A LARGE INLAID EXPORT-LACQUER CHEST
momoyama period (late 16th-early 17th century)

Of rectangular shape with drop-front and fitted with nine interior drawers, inlaid in mother-of-pearl and decorated in gold and brown hiramaki-e on a roiro ground with large panels surrounded by line, chevron, zig-zag and 'Namban' squiggle-scroll borders, the drop front decorated with a panel of two peacocks and orange trees on the exterior and on the interior with vines, the short sides with canted-rectangular panels of fruting orange trees and bell flowers, the back with a large panel of vines, and the top with a canted-rectangular panel of cockerels and orange trees; the interior drawers variously ornamented with matching lacquer and mother-of-pearl with vines, oranges and flowers, the interiors roiro; fitted with gilded metal lockplate, key, hinges, corner mounts, all engraved with flowers, and two side handles--17½ x 11¼ x 12¼in. (44.3 x 28.7 x 31.2cm.), losses to inlay and lacquer, nicks and chips, some damages restored, age cracks
