A hand phaser used in the first season of the television series, designed in black and white prior to the color version of the piece. The hand phaser was small enough to be conveniently worn under a shirt, while maintaining a limited range and power output. The phaser extended the working principles of the earlier lasers, and emitted several simultaneous beams of differing frequencies or multiples of one frequency. By selecting certain combinations of light frequencies, the hand phaser was used to dematerialize, disrupt, heat, stun and kill.
