AN EXPORT SILVER TANKARD AND JUG
MID 19TH CENTURY

The tankard of cylindrical shape with dragon handle, hinged domed cover and glass bottom, decorated in repousse with a performance of equestrian sports before an audience of dignitaries, the cover with scholars around the dragon finial, the interior lined and gilt-washed, a shaped cartouche engraved 'H W'; the jug of slightly tapering cylindrical shape with prunus branch handle, decorated in deep repousse on a stippled ground with butterflies among chrysanthemums issuing from rockwork, the base marked LC, Leeching with two characters

Lot Essay

Leeching is known to have worked from East Street, Canton; Sai Hing Kai, Canton; Club Street, Honan Island (1867); Queen's Road, Hong Kong (1846); 30, later 24A Queen's Road, Hong Kong (1872,1878); 729 Nanking Road, Shanghai (1878) during the period 1847-1880, although he is best known as a jeweler.
