Lot Essay
Among monochromes of the early Ming period which include copper-red and yellow, those glazed blue are probably the rarest.
It appears that dishes in this group were not made to a standard size. Similar examples are all of slighlty different diameter. An example of 5 7/8 in. (15 cm.) was sold in our New York Rooms, 2 December 1993, lot 266. Another of 8 in. (20.3 cm.) from the Winkworth Collection is illustrated by Jenyns, Ming Pottery and Porcelain, pl. 40A(i). A larger one is illustrated in Porcelains from the Tianjin Municipal Museum, no. 81. Cf. also the example from the Lundgren Collection illustrated by Wirgin in the Catalogue, no. 39, pl. 37:a.
Compare also an example of a blue-backed Xuande-marked dish of 8 in. (20.3 cm.) diameter from 'the cloud and dragon group' of monochromes with anhua decoration sold in these Rooms, 30 October 1995, lot 688.
