Lot Essay

The present example differs from its apparently similar relations in three main ways, making it a great rarity among the group. Firstly, the breaking waves are painted around the handles rather than as a broad band around the neck between the handles. Secondly, the presence of a key-pattern band dividing the neck and body decoration is an unusual feature. Thirdly, the lotus scroll depicts flowers in profile rather than fully frontal as in closely related vases. Compare the vase from the Palace Museum, Beijing illustrated in the Special Exhibition of Kangxi, Yongzheng, Qianlong Porcelain, Catalogue, no. 68, and the vases sold in these Rooms, 1 October 1991, lot 959 and 2 May 1994, lot 660.
