ENCIRCLED CHENGHUA SIX-CHARACTER MARK, KANGXI

Painted and enamelled around the exterior with sinuous leafy vines issuing melons and grapes amongst bamboo, all issuing from a grassy ground dotted with shrubs after the Chenghua design
3 in. (7.5 cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

Compare the 18th century winecup from the Oppenheim Collection in the British Museum illustrated by Jenyns, Later Chinese Porcelain, pl. XXIV, fig. 1c, together with a Chenghua original, fig. 1a. Another Kangxi example in the Percival David Foundation is illustrated in Oriental Ceramcis, Kodansha Series, vol. 6, no. 249.
