Lot Essay

Compare with a similar vase in the Eumorfopoulos Collection, Catalogue, vol. 5, col. pl. LXVII, no. E390.

A vase of precisely this shape and size with a Yongzheng mark and under a ru-type glaze was included in the National Palace Museum Special Exhibition of Qing Dynasty Monochromes, Catalogue, p. 133, col. pl. 79 and illustrated by Lu Liang-yu, Ch'ing Official and Popular Wares, vol. 5, p. 132.

For a smaller Song Dynasty guanyao prototype of this shape, cf. the National Palace Museum Special Exhibition of Sung Dynasty Kuan Ware, Catalogue, p. 63, col. pl. 21. Another, probably 14th Century, under a celadon glaze, is illustrated in Sekai Toji Zenshu, vol. 14, p. 234, col. pl. 227.

The vase compares with one of Guan type painted by Giuseppe Castiglione, dated Yongzheng First Year (1723), in the National Palace Museum, Taibei, illustrated by Michel Beurdeley and Guy Raindre, Qing Porcelain, pl. 216, suggesting that the present lot dates from the early period of the Qianlong reign.
