Woven as a hanging scroll centre with a dramatic black Shou character in xing cao shu (running cursive script) below five seals of the Qianlong emperor, Qianlong yulan zhibao, Bishu shanzhuang, Bazheng Maonian zhibao, Wufu wudaitang guxi tianzi bao, and Chunyu zhuren, the border exceptionally finely woven in shades of blue, green, yellow, red, aubergine and gold with striding and leaping dragons pursuing flaming pearls amidst dense cloud-scrolls, reserved on a rich yellow ground, the mount further decorated with sprigs of auspicious flowers and fruit, including peach, narcissus and lingzhi, interspersed with bats in flight on a rich ruby-red ground (tiny losses repaired and retouched)

One of the seals, Bazheng maonian zhibao suggests that this kesi scroll was made to commemorate the Eightieth birthday of Emperor Qianlong in 1790. Two further seals Bishu shanzhuang and Chunyu zhuren indicate that this scroll would have been hung at one of the Summer Palaces, probably Jehol.

It is extremely rare to find kesi hangings of this size and design and no other similar examples appear to have been published. Compare with the kesi hanging in the National Palace Museum, Taibei, illustrated in Zhongguo Meishu Quanji, Works of Art Series, vol. 7, Textile, no. 163, with the central shou character enclosing flowers reserved on a red ground.
