A PAIR OF IVORY-EMBELLISHED DOUBLE-GOURD LANDSCAPE PANELS
18TH CENTURY

Each carved of hardwood frames with a bat above and scroll borders with Buddhist Emblems, enclosing an oval panel below with a saddled elephant beside boys in a landscape, all in ivory onlayed over a painted blue ground, the upper section with a peach-shaped panel with ivory figures of immortals riding on clouds on a similar ground (several losses replaced, painted background retouched)

A rectangular landscape screen of this technique was inlcuded in the Art Gallery, The Chinese University of Hong Kong exhibition, Chinese Ivories from the Kwan Collection, 1990, Catalogue, no. 141.
