Lot Essay

Compare with a pair of dishes with the same poem, which pays homage to, and advises on, the proper preparation of good tea, sold in Hong Kong 16 November 1988, lot 381.

Cf. a similar dish on a lime-green ground illustrated by Soame Jenyns, Later Chinese Porcelain, pl. CXI; also the blue and white dish illustrated by H.A. van Oort, Chinese Blue and White of the 19th and 20th Centuries, pl. 2. Others were sold in these Rooms, 26 September 1989, lot 750, and another in our London Rooms, 8 June 1987, lot 161.
Jenyns notes that the Jiaqing Emperor was fond of inscribing ceramic wares with his verses.
