Pessac (Graves), 1er cru classé. Château-bottled
Remains of original tissues. Levels: five top, two just below top and two upper-shoulder
A couple of bottles from Jack's cellar served at Bordeaux Club dinners in May 1982 and November 1989. Haut-Brion has a very distinct character of its own, quite different to the first-growth Médocs and always elegant alongside the often more aggressive and masculine La Mission. Fairly consistent notes made at both dinners, and on several previous occasions, first in cask in 1955. Richly coloured; fabulous bouquet; sweet, with the idiosyncratic earthy, tobacco-like flavour, silky texture, perfect harmony. M.B.
