To be compared with the picture of the same subject, signed and dated 1641, sold at Christie's London, 17 December 1981, lot 94, with ill.
The subject is taken from Livy, Ab Urbe Condita, III:26. The story of Cincinnatus, a Roman consul who was highly praised for his brave military career and his modest life style, is often used as a moral example of ancient Roman virtue. Cincinnatus is shown here after his retirement, when he became a farmer. When in a time of crisis he was recalled to a temporary leadership, he immediately took up this job and became a dictator for fifteen days, before returning to his farm again.
