AFTER W. GRANT
East view of Poolo Chinco on the coast of Sumatra, the residence of W.Grant, Esqr.
by James Moffat
hand-coloured aquatint, printed by Moffat, Calcutta, 1802. Repaired tears, laid-down, washed. Window-mounted.
17 x 22¼in (43 x 56.5cm.)
RARE. James Moffat (1775-1815) spent his life as an artist based in Calcutta. His origins are obscure, though he probably served an apprenticeship with one of the printing establishments in the city. His first print was published in 1797, and in addition to his work as a landscape artist and publisher of prints after his own work, he is known to have accepted commissions to produce engravings of others work. "Judging from the rarity of each one, it appears that he... printed only a few impressions from each plate" (P.Godrej & P.Rohatgi. Scenic Splendours p.33).
