The curved rectangular padded back, scrolling arms and cushion covered in deep-buttoned brown leather, the channelled arm-supports and seat-rail on ring-turned, reeded tapering legs, brass caps and castors, the underside with signature in black ink 'Kirk ea....', restorations to frieze

Lot Essay

This Grecian-scrolled bergere with reed-wrapped legs relates to 'Easy Chairs' supplied by Gillows of London and Lancaster for Hackwood Park, Basingstoke, Hampshire and listed in their 1813 Memorandum. A pair of the chairs were sold by order of the Executors fo the estate of the 2nd Viscount Camrose, Hackwood Park, Christie's house sale, 20 April 1998, lot 55. Related chairs also feature in a number of Gillow's early 19th Century room elevations preserved at the Victoria and Albert Museum (E.47-1952). A similar berbere was sold anonymously, Sotheby's London, 21 February 1997, lot 234.
