Lot Essay

The boldly-carved mask of Apollo on this table is typical of the sculptural quality of much Rgence carving. Its impressive size, incised diaper pattern frieze and restrained foliate carving relate to a similar table from the Lelong collection, illustrated in S. de Ricci, Louis XIV und Rgence: Raumkunst und Mobiliar, Stuttgart, 1929, p. 174.
