Maria Emma Woodfin (1851-1914) was born in Tupelo, Missouri, where her father, Colonel Robert Woodfin was a merchant and plantation owner. During a family sojourn in Texas, she met her future husband, John Alfred Kerr. The Kerrs lived in several Texas towns before settling in Cotulla, where John became a merchant and a County sheriff; they moved once again in 1888, to Independence, Missouri.
