Lot Essay
Born in Portsmouth just before the turn of the nineteenth century, John S. Blunt painted and exhibited landscape, marine, portrait, and miniature paintings throughout New England until his death in 1835. A painting entitled Topsail Schooner in Sheltered Waters, illustrated in Little, "J.S. Blunt: New England Landscape Painter," in Antiques (September 1948), p.173, fig.4, may have been painted at the same site. For more information on Blunt see M. and M.
