Part of a larger composition, the majority of the surface dominated by a part brown oval medallion containing lightly raised scrolling palmette vine interlaced through cloudband motifs, the design left white and highlighted with red and turquoise, one side with a blue slip ground painted with parts of flowering vine and cloudband also in various colours and slips, cracked, repaired corners

Lot Essay

The combination of size and technique seen here is very unusual. All the techniques were being used in 1565, but to have the combination of the moulding, the slip painting in various colours being used both for ground colour and for design elements, coupled with normal glaze colours, is remarkable.
