Lot Essay

The celebrated Flora Danica service was commissioned by Crown Prince Frederick, the Danish Regent, in 1790, with the intention of presenting it to the Empress of Russia, Catherine II. However, on the death of the latter in 1796, the Prince took possession of the service for his own household. The original service is now at Rosenborg, in the Turret Room of the ancient palace.
