A Berlin ormolu-mounted two-handled commemorative vase
Circa 1810
Of campana form, the flared upper section applied with pendant white biscuit rose garlands against a gilt vermicul ground, above a pale-buff ground applied with eight white biscuit low-relief bust-length profiles of Queen Louise and her seven children modelled by Leonhard Posch, on a vertically ribbed ormolu band, the handles of the marbled lower part formed as bronzed eagles clutching pendant bronzed oak-leaf garlands in their claws and a continuous band of fruiting laurel with their beaks, the waisted marbled socle edged with a band of gilt cisel ornament on a square marbled base, the interior with a broad band of matt gilt cisel scrolling foliage within a richly gilt rim (part of upper section restuck, small damages and restorations to rose garlands, area of restoration to one side of top of socle)

Lot Essay

The children of Queen Louise (1776-1810) and Friedrich Wilhelm III (1770-1840) of Prussia were: Kronprinz Friedrich Wilhelm (1795-1861, later King Friedrich Wilhelm IV of Prussia in 1840), Prinz Wilhelm (1797-1888, later King Wilhelm I of Prussia in 1861), Prinzessin Charlotte (1798-1860), Prinz Karl (1801-1883), Prinzessin Alexandrine (1803-1892), Prinzessin Louise (1808-1870) and Prinz Albrecht (1809-1872). For a plaque of circa 1825 with biscuit profiles of Friedrich Wilhelm III, Queen Louise and their children see Erich Kllmann and Margarete Jarchow, Berliner Porzellan (1987), vol. II, p. 387, pl. 200, and also a similar plaque sold in these Rooms on 3 November 1997, lot 220.
