Lot Essay

An identical vase is in the Collection of the Capital Museum, Beijing.

It is very unusual to find striding dragons decorating 14th century Longquan celadon wares. Cf. a spouted bowl incised with a dragon medallion surrounded by a lotus scroll to the interior included in the Special Exhibition of Dragon-motif Porcelain in Taibei, 1983, Catalogue, no. 11; and a dish from the Percival David Foundation, London, incised with a dragon is illustrated in G. St. G.M. Gompertz, Chinese Celadon Wares, pl. 92.
