A LARGE CARVED LONGQUAN CELADON BARBED RIM BOWL
14TH/15TH CENTURY

The heavily-potted deep bowl moulded with fluted walls extending from the sturdy straight foot to the bracketed rim, the interior carved with an open flower within a combed quatrefoil panel, surrounded by four scrolling peonies separated by leafy stems, a band of key pattern within combed borders along the rim, the outermost border repeated on the undecorated exterior, all under an attractive green glaze pooling in recesses, the unglazed firing ring on the underside and parts of the foot ring oxidized to a rusty orange tone

Lot Essay

A slightly larger Longquan celadon bowl of related form, carved on both the exterior and interior, was sold in our London Rooms, 12 May 1986, lot 90.
