Lot Essay

It is rare to find enamel tripod censers of this shape bearing Yongzheng marks.

A closely related Kangxi-marked famille rose yellow-ground Beijing enamel censer surrounded by a elaborate peony scroll is illustrated in Masterpieces of Chinese Enamel Ware in the National Palace Museum, pl. 37. Another famille rose Qianlong-marked censer of related decoration, although reserved on a black ground, from the Stephen Junkunc III collection, sold in our New York Rooms, 28 March 1996, lot 141.

Compare also with the Beijing enamel vase illustrated by Hugh Moss, By Imperial Command, pl. 18, where the Yongzheng four-character mark is written within a similar peach-shaped panel.
