A LACQUERED AND GILT-WOOD FIGURE OF GUANYIN

Seated with the right knee slightly raised supporting the right hand holding a scroll, leaning to one side resting against the left hand concealed under voluminous robe gathered at the waist and falling in undulating folds around the legs, the hair swept up into a double-knot partially covered by a cowl (age cracks infilled)

Lot Essay

The result of radio-carbon dating, University of Arizona AA-25641, is consistent with the dating of this lot.

A similarly seated wood Guanyin holding beads in the right hand, decorated with gold lacquer is in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated Zhongguo Meishi Quanji, vol. 6, no. 151.
