MAYER, Julius Robert (1814-1878). Die organische Bewegung in ihrem Zusammenhange mit dem Stoffwechsel. Heilbronn: Drechsler, 1845.
8o (202 x 127 mm). Errata leaf at end. (Scattered light foxing.) Original blindstamped cloth, spine gilt lettered and decorated (small portion of lower spine end chipped away, spine repaired). Provenance: F. Denervaud (signature on front free endpaper).
FIRST EDITION. A prosperous physician from Heilbronn, Mayer "was one of the early formulators of the principle of conservation of energy" (DSB). In this work, conceived as an attack on Liebig's chemical theory of animal heat, Mayer extended the principle "to cover the entire organic realm, establishing conservation of force as the basis of all physiology: plants convert the sun's energy into latent chemical force, which is then consumed as food by animals and converted into body heat and mechanical muscle force" (Norman). Waller 10945; Norman 1470.
