Lot Essay

A version of the present picture, signed and dated 1651, is in the in the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen Munich (H. Jantzen, Das Niederländische Architekturbild, 1979, p.220, n078, fig53). The composition follows the engraving by Jan Londerseel, after Hendrick Aerts (H. Jantzen, op. cit., p.217, n02, fig.17). As pointed out by Jantzen, the artist was trained as an architect and was active in Middelburg. The man reclining in the foreground also appears in the Interior of the St. Laurenskerk, Rotterdam, wich was recently on the New York art market (H. Jantzen, op. cit., p.204, fig.54 c).
