The sitter, daughter of Willem van Lodestein and Pietertje van Lodestein, née Velthuysen, married Jean Etienne de Pineda on 18 February 1786. She was the widow of Johannes Vertholen, whom she had married on 10 July 1769.
The present unpublished picture is an addition to the oeuvre of the artist, the catalogue raisonné of which was compiled by M.L. Wurfbain, "Nicolas Joseph Delin; schilder te Antwerpen en Leiden", in Leids Kunsthisthorisch Jaarboek, 1985, pp.315/331. His oeuvre consists of both portraits and history paintings. The present lot is characteristic for his style, which he developed in Paris under the influence of Louis Michel van Loo, with whom he trained.
