Lot Essay

Van Cleve's drawing dated 1588 of comparable subject, technique and format is in the Rijksprentenkabinet, Amsterdam, K.G. Boon, op.cit., no. 129, illustrated. Another is in the Prentenkabinet, Leiden (inv. no. 1024, Het vroege Landschap, exhib. catalogue, Leiden, 1966-7, no. 32, illustrated). Others, also dated 1588, are in the Museum Boymans-van Beuningen, Rotterdam, the Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen, and in the Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin (E. Bock, J. Rosenberg, Die Niederländischen Meister, Berlin, 1930, no. 1173). They were possibly intended for a series of prints like Regionum, Rurium, Fundorumq, Varii Amoeni Prospectus (Holl. [IV] 39-50) by A. Collaert of 1587 after drawings by Van Cleve.
