The composition is closely comparable to drawings by Toeput, especially in the handling of the figures, trees and reflections in the water, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (F. Stampfle, Netherlandish Drawings of the Fifteenth and Sixteenth Centuries ..., New York Princeton New Jersey, 1991, p. 60, no. 102); the Louvre, Paris (F. Lugt, Inventaire généneral des Dessins des Ecoles du Nord, Paris, 1949, no. 1354), as well as in the Frick Art Gallery, New York (L. Menegazzi, 'Grafica del Pozzoserrato', Toeput a Treviso, Asolo, 1988, p. 60, no. 20, illustrated). This winter scene could represent January or December in a series of the Months of the Year.
It has been suggested that the city in the background is Antwerp.
