Willem Schellinks, born in Amsterdam, is best known for his topographical drawings, which he executed on his trips through different European countries, while his brother Daniel (1627-1701) is mainly known for his varied landscapes. In 1661-65 Willem Schellinks travelled to England, France, Switzerland, Italy and Germany, accompanying the wealthy ship owner's son Jacques Thierry on his Grand Tour. At the same time he made a large number of topographical drawings commissioned by the Amsterdam lawyer Laurens van der Hem, who illustrated his Atlas Blaeu with mostly topographical views commissioned from different artists (now in the Graphische Sammlung Albertina, Vienna, see also lot 143 in this sale). The present drawing, obviously done in situ, dates from this journey, providing a dating of circa 1661-2.
