Lot Essay

Dubourcq was a pupil of Andreas Schelfhout and travelled to England, Germany, France, Switzerland, and Italy. The present sketches are from his journey through Italy in 1843-4 with his fellow artist Willem Bodeman, visiting Rome, Florence, Terni, Tivoli, Olevano and Massa. Most of his drawings name the site depicted, and from a diary kept during his journey it is known that he sent home 106 landscape drawings, 46 figurestudies and 47 sketches in oil. Travelling via Florence, Venice, Munich and Paris, the artist returned to Amsterdam in December 1844. A number of his drawings are in the Rijksprentenkabinet, Amsterdam and in the Museum Boymans-van Beuningen, Rotterdam. A further group of drawings was sold in these Rooms, 29 April 1997, lot 210. A view of Cori by Daniel Dupré is included as lot 230 in this sale.
