Lot Essay

The present animal study sheets may relate to works such as Rickets Farm, Cookham Dene (Tate Gallery, London), 1938, (Bell 253) which depicts a number of pigs and piglets. Chickens and ducks apppear in Spencer's Saint Francis and the Birds (Tate Gallery, London), 1935, (Bell 164), a painting rejected by the hanging committee of the Royal Academy when it was submitted for inclusion in the 1935 Summer Exhibition; this precipitated Spencer's resignation as an A.R.A.
