Lot Essay

The present landscape view in three separate sheets was also painted by Spencer in his Near Southwold, Suffolk (Bradford Art Galleries), 1924, (Bell 103). In 1937 Spencer commented on the oil painting, 'This was the first landscape I ever enjoyed painting, I very much like the place. It was full of wandering marshland but full of character'. (Tate 733.3.1). (see K. Bell op. cit. p.412).
